It’s delicious, it’s nutritious - and, yes, it’s also great for your hair. Avocado oil is packed with vitamins, lipids and antioxidants that nourish and protect your strands - here’s how to use it properly and the benefits it provides.

Who can use avocado oil on their hair?

As a rule, avocado is great for all hair types as it penetrates deep into the scalp and shaft, so it’s an ideal treatment for damaged hair. However, it's not recommended for anyone with an avocado allergy - and if you have fine hair, use a very small amount, and only apply it to your lengths.

The benefits of using avocado oil on your hair

  • It detangles knotted hair: When your hair is wet, it’s more prone to tangling and breakage. Adding avocado oil to your locks after your hair washing routine will act as a lubricant to help stop this from happening.
  • It moisturises and hydrates dry hair: Avocado oil contains a higher amount of monounsaturated fats than olive oil, and is known to deeply nourish hair. This is because monounsaturated fats have great penetrability, which means they can ease into your locks quickly and easily, creating a protective barrier to support moisture retention.
  • It revitalises stressed, over-styled hair: Over-styling and harsh chemicals can leave your hair feeling dry, dull and damaged. Avocado oil contains vitamins E and B to help nourish your scalp, and restore the look and feel of healthy hair.
  • It replenishes fragile hair: Avocado oil is also well-known for its replenishing properties, as it contains a rich blend of proteins, folic acid, magnesium and minerals. Those nutrients help seal cuticle cells, which strengthen the flexibility of hair and enhance its resistance against breakage, preventing split ends.
  • It helps add shine: Avocado oil can help add a serious amount of shine to dull hair, as its vitamins, minerals and fatty acids can penetrate every layer of your hair fibres thoroughly - making your locks feel soft and enriched from the inside out.

How often can I use avocado oil on my hair?

If you have very dry hair, it’s safe to use avocado oil in small amounts up to two times a day, morning and night. If you have fine hair or greasy hair, we’d advise only using avocado oil 2-3 times a week, and shampooing your hair thoroughly after you’ve finished your treatment.

Can I use avocado oil on my hair overnight?

Avocado oil is rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids that promote hair health. By applying it overnight, you’re allowing the oil to deeply penetrate the hair shaft, providing intense hydration and helping to repair damage.

Cover your hair with a shower cap or wrap it in a towel to prevent any oil transfer to your bedding, and in the morning, thoroughly rinse and shampoo your hair to remove the oil residue.

If you’re not sure how your hair will react to an overnight oil treatment, it's best to test this method on a small section of hair before applying it all over.

Does avocado oil make hair greasy?

Used sparingly, avocado oil shouldn’t make your hair and scalp feel greasy, as it absorbs easily into your hair and skin. However it is a natural emollient, so if you find your hair’s looking flat and oily after using it, simply wash it and style as usual.
